David Kovar
Hanshi
Hanshi Dave Kovar is a world-renowned martial artist, author, business coach, and industry pioneer. Universally recognized in the martial arts community as the "Teacher of Teachers," Kovar has spent over five decades mastering both the physical practice of martial arts and the operational systems that support it. As a 9th-degree Black Belt with rankings in 10 different martial arts styles, he has trained tens of thousands of students and coached thousands of school owners across multiple continents.
The Martial Arts Journey
Dave Kovar’s martial arts journey began as a teenager in 1972, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Tim. He immediately fell in love with Kenpo Karate under the tutelage of Hanshi Bruce Juchnik. Driven by a lifelong "student mindset," Kovar aggressively expanded his horizons, seeking out elite masters to study diverse combat and defensive arts.
Between 1974 and 1989, Kovar was an active and fierce competitor, participating in over 200 martial arts tournaments across forms and fighting categories.
A Lifetime of Diverse Mastery
Driven by this relentless pursuit of excellence, Kovar expanded his training across a vast spectrum of traditions, ultimately earning black belts and advanced proficiencies across 10 distinct martial arts styles.
His foundation was forged in Kenpo Karate (under Hanshi Bruce Juchnik), which served as the initial springboard for his martial arts career. He quickly diversified his functional skillset by mastering Japanese Jujitsu (under Bob McKean) and traditional Okinawan Kobudo weapons (under Shihan Mikio Nishiuchi). Kovar also deeply immersed himself in the quick, fluid dynamics of Filipino stick and blade fighting, developing expert proficiency in both Serrada Escrima (under the Angel Cabales Organization and George Santana) and Modern Arnis (under Grand Master Remy Presas).
As his journey progressed, he formally refined his striking mechanics in Tae Kwon Do (under Grand Master Jhoon Rhee) and dedicated himself to the precise, classical discipline of the Japanese sword, earning a black belt in Toei-ryu Iaido (under Shihan Mikio Nishiuchi). Never one to stay stagnant as combat sports evolved, Kovar adapted to the modern era by earning a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (under Cesar and Ralph Gracie) and securing an Expert certification in Jeet Kune Do (under Burt Richardson). His comprehensive movement vocabulary is rounded out by the internal healing and martial movements of Tai Chi (under David Dernhardt) along with reality-based tactical systems like CDT and LRT (under Tom Patiere).
While Kovar excelled on the mat, his most enduring legacy lies in how he revolutionized the operational and professional standards of the modern martial arts industry.
Kovar’s Satori Academy: In 1978, Kovar opened his first martial arts school. Later joined by his brother Tim, the operation grew into the highly successful Kovar's Satori Academy of Martial Arts, which manages multiple locations across the Sacramento, California region and has promoted over 3,000 students to black belt and beyond.
Kovar Systems: Founded in 1994, Kovar Systems was born out of Kovar's realization that outstanding martial artists often struggled with the business side of running a school. He institutionalized integrity-based business practices, creating frameworks for student acquisition, staff development, and retention.
ProMAC & MAIA: He founded the Professional Martial Arts College (ProMAC) and has served as the Lead Instructor for the Martial Arts Industry Association (MAIA), standardizing high-quality instructor certification worldwide.
Core Philosophy
Kovar's operations and teachings are driven by a strict hierarchy of personal identity and values:
"I consider myself a Martial Artist first, an Instructor second, and a Businessman third."
— Hanshi Dave Kovar
He heavily emphasizes the concept of "Satori"—a Japanese term he defines as "being in the moment at your best"—and advocates for the "Five Core Mindsets" of school management: creating the friendliest environment, maintaining absolute cleanliness, treating classes as the premium product, communicating relentlessly, and always recruiting.
