George Mattson
10th Dan - Grandmaster - Uechiryu Karate
George Mattson is the father of Uechi karate in America. He began his training in Okinawa in 1956. His teacher was the renowned Grandmaster Ryuko Tomoyose.
Sensei Mattson is the first American to attain the rank of black belt in Uechiryu karate. He is a well-known author and was one of the very first to publish a book in English about karate. He was also the first to teach Uechiryu karate professionally – resulting in the majority of the original growth of Uechiryu in North America. His world-famous Mattson Academy of Karate was a veritable melting pot of martial arts activity, with visitors such as Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, and Jhoon Ree coming to train and share their knowledge.
His accomplishments at promoting Uechiryu are second to none and he continues to teach on a daily basis in Mt. Dora, FL. Sensei Mattson is a legendary, iconic karate figure and continues to devote his life to the growth of Uechiryu.
